On the Geriatric Nursing in Korea
Dong Yeon Lee
Abstract
Aging is an important social issue in Korea today because of the increasing elderly population and extended life expectancy. Elderly people have a higher potential for illness and loneliness than younger people due to physical, psychological,
economic
and social decline. Most of the aged in Korea are taken care of by family members at home, without the support of a nurse or other health care professionals, because of a lack of primary health care providers and high costs of medical care as
well
as
insufficient health insurance and social security benefits. Family caregivers have also experienced increased difficulties and frustration in the care of their elderly members as their health status deteriorates.
The professional nurse with their expanded roles has the potential to meet the need of the aged and their aging process, and thus can improve the quality of life of the elderly with the delivery of primary health care services. The purpose of
this
research is to investigate the best may for the nurse to establish contact with the aged, for the delivery of primary health care services throughout Korea.
